How much caffeine in a strong cup of coffee

Strong coffee can be anything from the intensity of the flavour to the caffeine hit it provides or how dark the roast is. If you're someone who likes strong coffee because it gets you going in the morning, you might be wondering just how much caffeine you're getting with each cup you drink.

This is important because caffeine is a stimulant and too much can lead to health issues, including sleeplessness and heart palpitations. So, how much caffeine is in your strong cup of coffee?

The average 8-ounce mug of brewed black coffee contains about 95 milligrams of caffeine. The average 1-ounce espresso contains 64 milligrams. So, the amount you're getting depends on how you're drinking your coffee and the quantity you consume.

In general, experts say it's fine to consume about 400 milligrams of caffeine on a daily basis. That means you can enjoy about four mugs of standard coffee. However, if you like your coffee strong, you may not be able to drink as much.

To make strong coffee, the water to grounds ratio is often changed from the standard two tablespoons of grounds per cup of water. That means you're getting a more intense flavour from your beans but could also be getting more caffeine than you think.

If your idea of a strong cup of coffee is a robust, dark flavour, you can choose beans that have been roasted longer. This will produce a stronger tasting cup of joe without adding a lot more caffeine to the mix. Of course, you also have the option of making a decaffeinated version if you desire.

While caffeine has its benefits, too much can be harmful so make sure you're balancing your intake. That way you can enjoy strong coffee without the negative side effects.
